WHAT IS AI, REALLY?

What is AI, really? If you are not sure, you are not alone — and you are in remarkably good company. The most advanced researchers at Google, Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and Microsoft will tell you honestly that they do not fully understand how these systems work either. Anthropic's own interpretability team — the scientists whose entire job is to understand what happens inside AI — states plainly that "it's very challenging to reason about the safety of neural networks without understanding them." OpenAI's head of interpretability announced in late 2025 that he was doubling down on efforts "to fully understand how neural networks work" — because that understanding does not yet exist. One leading AI safety researcher put it even more directly: he suspects deep learning models "don't have a simple explanation — so it's simply not possible to fully reverse engineer a large-scale neural network in a way that is comprehensible to a person." The research is converging. The answers are not fully here yet. And that matters for all of us.

At its core, AI — specifically the kind powering ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude — is a large language model: a very complex algorithm with billions of parameters running across enormous amounts of computers, trained on text from across the entire internet.
