§7001. Definitions

In this title, the term "Army" means the Army or Armies referred to in the Constitution of the United States, less that part established by law as the Air Force.

The words "Army of the United States" and "are synonymous and" are omitted as surplusage, since the term "Army" is used throughout the revised title. 5:181–3(a) (last sentence) and 10:1a(a) (last sentence) are omitted as surplusage.

Amendments 2018—Pub. L. 115–232 renumbered section 3001 of this title as this section. 1987—Pub. L. 100–26 inserted "the term" after "In this title,".

Effective Date of 2018 Amendment Amendment by Pub. L. 115–232 effective Feb. 1, 2019, with provision for the coordination of amendments and special rule for certain redesignations, see section 800 of Pub. L. 115–232, set out as a note preceding section 3001 of this title.

Deeming Rule for References to Provisions of Title 10 Redesignated by Pub. L. 115–232 Pub. L. 115–232, div. A, title VIII, §809(t), Aug. 13, 2018, 132 Stat. 1844, provided that: "Any reference in a provision of law (other than a provision amended by this section [see Tables for classification]) to a section or chapter redesignated by this part [part II (§§806–809) of subtitle A of title VIII of div. A of Pub. L. 115–232, see Tables for classification] shall be deemed to refer to the section or chapter as so redesignated."
